Cité Modèle

Located in Laeken, the Cité Modèle is one of Belgium’s most ambitious social housing projects. Designed in 1954 by architect Fernand Brunfaut, it was meant to showcase the country’s commitment to workers’ housing on the eve of Expo 58.

Inspired by Le Corbusier’s principles and the Brutalist movement, the Cité was built in raw concrete and steel, with rigid lines and an inward-facing layout. Intended as a refuge from urban chaos, this design also fostered a sense of isolation over time.

This documentary series explores the unique forms, textures, and atmosphere of the neighborhood — where modernist utopia meets social reality.
